Trumpet and Flugelhorn
Adelaide born Paul Rawson won the Elder Conservatorium Scholarship at the age of fourteen, enabling him to study at the University of Adelaide under Standish Roberts, where he later completed a Bachelor of Music degree with First Class Honours, in 1977, majoring in Performance. During this year Paul was runner-up in the International Festival of Youth Orchestras concerto competition in Aberdeen, Scotland. In the following year, he was again runner-up in the National Finals of the Australian Instrumental & Vocal Competition.
Paul was appointed to the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in 1978 and is presently acting co-principal of the newly formed Queensland Orchestra. He has also given radio recitals and lectures and has an interest in the authentic performance of baroque music, having performed with baroque orchestras in Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide,
As a teacher, Paul has taught at various music camps including the Australian National Music Camp, as well as tertiary institutions throughout Queensland.
In addition to his performing and teaching responsibilities, Paul has an interest in manufacturing techniques of the (natural) baroque trumpet, embarking on an overseas tour in 1998 to study with the world's leading specialists in Europe and Canada.
