Clarinet
Kate Travers was born in Tasmania. She studied clarinet with Duncan Abercromby , principal clarinet of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, from the age of 15 and continued at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music where she completed her Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours in 1985.
In that year she was the recipient of the Thomas Matthews Memorial Scholarship, and was the first Music student to be awarded a University Post Graduate Scholarship. She was a finalst in the ABC Young Performers Competition in 1986, and later in this year took up a scholarship with the Sydney Sinfonia.
In 1987 she moved to Queensland after being appointed to what was known at the time as the Qld Theatre Orchestra, later the Qld Philharmonic, and continues to enjoy orchestral life as an ongoing member of the amalgamated Qld Orchestra.
She has played with the AustralianYouth Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, The Australian Ensemble and various chamber groups and more recently X-Collective.
She is married to Richard Madden, a trumpet player with the Qld Orchestra and enjoys warm weather, being on tour, being outdoors, all exercise and being taxi driver to her two teenagers Alex and Ben.
