Hugh Ponnuthurai began studying bassoon at the age of 17 while at Perth Modern Senior High School in Western Australia and continued his studies at the West Australian Conservatorium of Music where he graduated with a Bachelor of Music in performance.  He has since worked with the West Australian , Tasmanian, Adelaide and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras, as well as performing with the ACO and the Ariel New Music Ensemble.  In 1991 Hugh moved to Brisbane to commence work with the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra and has been associate principal bassoon with the Queensland Orchestra since 2001. 

Appart from his bassoon work Hugh has been seen performing in many venues in Brisbane as a cabaret performer performing at the inaugural Brisbane Cabaret Festival and working with Blokes In Voice.
